Letter, 1865 May 1.

A letter addressed to Colonel W.W. Davis from Camp Southard, near Manchester, Virginia, regarding the war's end and hope for the future of the nation: "Let us thank God that the war is at an end, and with the earnest hope that we may ever hereafter be a united people,....and that victory vouchsafed to us may be used for the benefit of the whole nation, and not to gratify passion and prejudice."
